Like you, I’m swamped at home and at the office. Fall is in full swing – we’ve already done our pumpkin picking and Halloween decorating, and this weekend we’ll be turning back the clocks.  How I will be sad when the sun sets yet one hour earlier! It will mean winter is not far away.  But one season and holiday at a time – at DASHA® we’re busy taking care of patients and supporting Darren as he raises money for the LLS while training for the ING NYC Marathon.  If you haven’t visited our Team DASHA® page yet, please do so by clicking HERE. You know I can’t let October pass by without sharing some of my favorite things, and this month, in honor of Darren, all of my favorite things are marathon related:

FASHION – When it comes to running gear, you want to be sleek, practical and comfortable.  In other words, you want to look good and feel good. No one understands this combination better than Nike.  The Nike Dri-Fit collared shirts are the new uniforms for the men of the DASHA® staff, and I’m a huge fan of their long sleeve women’s running shirts that pull moisture away from the body, don’t chafe (a concern when running long distances), and let your body breathe and keep the air flowing.  Their capri pants have the same technology.  Be sure to check out the awesome discount we’re offering members of the DASHA® community at Urban Athletics, where you can get huge savings on Nike gear and other athletic products through November 3rd by clicking HERE.

FOOD – Darren is looking at running 26.2 miles.  That’s a lot of miles!  Recovery drinks are important to incorporate when training and running marathons, and one of the best recovery drinks is tart cherry juice.  If you’ve never had it, it’s delicious and full of antioxidants, which help to limit inflammation and muscle damage.  I recommend Dynamic Health Tart Cherry Juice Concentrate.  It’s best to drink 2 glasses a day for 5 days before the event, and then on the big day of the race and the day after as well.

BEAUTY – It’s too early to tell if the marathon will be sunny or cloudy in NYC, but no matter, it’s outdoors!  And that means we need to take the advice of Dr. Russak (click HERE to read her article) on preventing the effects of sun damage, and wear sunscreen that is water resistant and protects against UVA and UVB Rays.  It doesn’t matter if it’s summer or winter, protect your skin at all times.  The Skin Cancer Foundation approves the following sports sunscreens, which are perfect for the perspiring athlete running for hours on end: Banana Boat UltraMist Sport Performance Continuous Spray Sunblock SPF, Coppertone SPORT Sunscreen Stick SPF 30, Hawaiian Tropic Sport SPF 45, NO-AD Sport SPF 50 Active Sunblock Lotion, Ocean Potion Oil Free Sport Xtreme Sunblock SPF 30, and Rite Aid SPF 30 Sport Continuous Spray.

CULTURE – It’s fall, which is prime pumpkin and apple picking time.  Apples are healthy, tasty, and the DASHA® symbol, and apple picking is a great family activity for those with kids.  I love Seven Ponds Orchard in Water Mill, NY.  My kids had the best time being outdoors and choosing apples, which we now have coming out our ears!  NYC has other great places to go apple picking that aren’t too far out of the city.  Click HERE to read more on those.
