No matter the size of the gym, the thought of working out in front of a room of strangers terrifies some, and I can’t really blame them. All those big weird-looking machines, weights that you have no idea what to do with, plus a handful of sexy and already fit people drinking those colorful drinks from their fancy water bottles with their airpods in blasting some new house-music hits all walking around. Needless to say, the gym can be an overwhelming place with a lot going on.
So, if you find yourself feeling lost amongst a sea of gym-aholics, trust me you are not alone. First step, knowing where to begin. This is why there are apps (thank the gym gods). Here are a few that I like!
- PEAR Personal Fitness Coach: This personally trainer lives within your phone. How cool is that?! This app is all about eyes-free, hands-free audio coaching. It offers a wide array of workout packages, coaches, fitness trackers, and devices, all of which allow you to keep track of your personal performance. There is a free tier, but it has a limited selection of workouts. I suggest investing in the $5.99/per month option that offers an endless about of workouts and features. So, just open the app, put those headphones in and walk into the gym like you’ve been their your whole life!
- Freeletics: This app offers a host of workouts, all centered around HIIT training, and yeah you guessed it, it’s free! Offering four free platforms – Gym, Bodyweight Workouts and Training, Nutrition and Running. The super convenient thing about this app is that there are actually videos of each exercise demonstrating proper form, so you’ll be able to see how the pros do it, even if you aren’t quite there yet.
- Fitness Point: If you’re searching for a collection of workout instructions that go into tons of details, breaking down each step and what muscle groups are affected, then this is the app for you. My favorite thing about this app is that you can actually build your own workout based on the muscle groups you are looking to target. I totally pull a Sha-nanigan™ with this app and build out my workouts all the time. It even allows you to log your each exercise with notes for weight changes and how many calories you burned.
So, say goodbye to that gym anxiety once and for all and walk into the gym like you own it!!
