5 Interview Questions You Should Be Asking

Nothing makes me happier than when a client feels the urge to share how wonderful the service is that they’ve received from one of our independent client providers. I know we’re doing our job when our clients are inspired to give us positive feedback and share their experience with colleagues and friends.

One of the most important things to do in building your team is to know how to hire the right people. Too many people don’t know how to conduct an interview. Here are the 5 questions you should be asking during the interview process.

Can you give me an example of a time you went above and beyond? It’s one thing to do what you are hired to do; it’s another to redefine the position and raise the standards of excellence. You want the people who will do more than what is required. Ask your prospective candidate to articulate an example.

If I contacted your last employer, what would he or she say about you, good and bad? Put your potential hire on the spot and ask how his or her former boss viewed his or her work. The grace and ease with which the answer to this question is handled will tell you a lot.

What would you like to be known for at (insert your company name)? This question is an excellent way to determine the value your prospective new hire will add. Perhaps he or she has a hidden talent or interest that will add value to and broaden the scope of the team. For instance, in my field I can come across candidates who might want to work especially with senior citizens or autistic children or athletes – all of which enable us to reach a wider clientele and expand our horizons. New blood can always help you to broaden your perspective.

What are the things you don’t like about your job? We’re all human. Even the jobs we love come with things we don’t like. It’s good to know what your candidate might not like, especially when you are balancing a team of personalities and strengths.

Always call to check at least two professional and one personal reference. You’d be surprised how many people don’t check references in this day and age. Usually reference checks confirm what you already know–that you want to hire this person, but once in a while they can surprise you in the other direction. Be prepared and investigate.
