Today is National Eat Your Vegetables Day! The perfect day to start  improving your health, control those extra calories and live a healthy lifestyle.

It seems as though the nutrition community has spent decades running in circles about how to best teach the people regardless of their community, just how important it is to eat vegetables and have a balanced diet! Eating your veggies does not mean you should stop eating protein, fiber or cut out fat. In fact,  healthy fats, proteins and fiber in your diet is essential.  And although many of us should eat less sugar eating your veggies doesn’t mean to cut it out completely.  Simply getting more servings of fruits and veggies into your day can make a huge difference in the overall quality of most people’s health. We could go on and on with unsustainable changes people make to their diet and lifestyle that place them ten steps behind each time they try something new. As we know obesity is a tremendous issue in this country and is starting to be in other parts of the world. And unfortunately it promotes chronic diseases including heart disease which remains the #1 cause of death in the US, cancer and diabetes . The fastest driving force of obesity comes from taking in more calories than your body needs and with fruits and veggies intake being on the lower end and too much intake of artificial sweeteners, sugar and salt it’s a complete disaster. Here’s where we lack, meaning we just don’t get enough of fiber, potassium, antioxidants or vegetables! The best way to control your weight gain and health is to avoid the stuff that’s hurting your body or making you feel sluggish in the first place.

Start your day by including a fruit at breakfast and adding in a healthy portion of your lunch and dinner with vegetables. If you eat a wide variety of colors you are almost guaranteed to gain a variety of nutrients. Whether you go raw, boiled or roasted vegetables can taste delicious. Today is the perfect day to stop into farmers market and start getting some ideas on how you can create your own vegetable garden!
