How to Dial Things Back in the Craziest City in the World

New York City has a reputation for being the best city in the world. (Let’s face it, it is.) Which means things are intense. There’s not a famous song with the lyrics, “If I can make it there/I’ll make it anywhere,” for nothing. The Big Apple is cutthroat.

If you want something in this town, you have to go after it with every fiber of your being in order to get the success or results you seek, whether that’s in your career, the insane real estate market, or hard to get reservations at a hot restaurant. And then physically, forget about it – it’s a dog eat dog survival of the fittest competition – you fight for space on the train at rush hour, you race to make the train as it gets ready to pull out of the station, you elbow your way through the streets, you wait in an impossibly long line at Starbucks. It never ends. Most of the time, you love the concrete jungle. But then other times it makes you want to scream, tear your hair out and contemplate moving out west to become a whitewater rafting guide…or something far less stressful involving far more nature.

So what can you do to get back to you, to keep your head on your shoulders and remain down-to-earth in the most exciting place on the planet? How to you simplify things in the most complicated place on earth? Here are some ideas:

TAKE IN YOUR VIEW OF MANHATTAN IN A DIFFERENT WAY. You spend a lot of time dodging street and foot traffic and responding to emails or text messages on your phone while navigating the streets on a daily basis. But take a bike ride along the river or on one of the thousands of bike paths, walk in one of the great parks where you can actually hear the insects (while it’s still warm) and birds, take the ferry to Governor’s Island, or rent a kayak or canoe and paddle out a ways – see how your perspective shifts and your hope is renewed as you glance back at the towering skyline and fall in love with your city all over again.

BE A TOURIST IN YOUR OWN CITY. There’s a reason tour buses from around the world are packed and soaking up the culture. When was the last time you took in a museum, show, concert, the zoo or some other attraction you can only do in NYC? Don’t wait for visitors to crash at your apartment to show them why your city’s great. Go out there and live it. When you’re soaking up some culture, you’re reminded that the world is bigger than the inside of your head and there is so much more to open your eyes to.

DEVELOP A SELF-CARE PROGRAM. Yup, you read that right. How can you do what you want to do in life if you are not taking care of your health and well-being? This is the very reason DASHA® was created – to facilitate you becoming the very best version of yourself and reaching all of your wellness goals. The sky is the limit when you nurture yourself before everyone and everything. So go get that massage, take that dance class or gym class you’ve always wanted to, get that chronic injury healed, try that acupuncture….go, go now! You won’t regret it.
