Healthy Workday Lunches for Your Wallet and Waistline

If you’re buying your lunch everyday in New York City, chances are that even with lunch specials, you’re forking over a pretty sum of cash every week all year long. Additionally, you may be subjecting yourself to things that aren’t good for you: lots of sugar, salt or calories.

Diet, or eating right, is what helps you to lose weight. Exercise will only tone your body. So what about taking better control over what you eat Monday through Friday? Here are the general rules of thumb on packing easy, fast, healthy lunches that will hold you over.

Protein should form the heart of your meal. You need protein to keep away from the mid-afternoon energy crash, and fruit and veggies are healthy, guilt-free and full of essential vitamins. It’s easy to pack protein that will keep well or you can heat up in the microwave at work. Examples of great protein choices that travel well to work include pork and chicken (make them the night before), hardboiled eggs, cashew, almond or peanut butter on an apple, hummus with carrots, peppers or celery, yogurt with fruit. You can also pack hard nuts for something to crunch on. Tip: Pack it the night before so you don’t run out of time in the morning.

Fruits and/or veggies should accompany your protein of choice. Select raw fruits or vegetables that are in season and don’t make a mess – citrus in winter, berries in summer, and carrots are always easy. You can also pack dried fruits, so long as they aren’t loaded with excess sugar.

Skip the high sugar beverage and opt for water. Hydrating all day long is good for your body, your skin, your digestion and sleep. Don’t pack on unnecessary calories by consuming a soda, sugary iced tea or fruit drink. Drink water all day long – this shouldn’t be hard because you’re near a bathroom all day long at work and it will help you eat less at lunch.

Eating well with food your bring from home will satisfy your hunger more, make you less likely to give into snack temptation later, and help keep your wallet, but not you, fat.
