Understanding the Difference Between Diet and Exercise

In an age where we’re chained to our desks and our technology, renewing our commitment to working out and eating right is more challenging than ever. But whether you’re hoping to lose a few or a lot, or simply keep what you’ve got, DASHA® wants to set the record straight about diet and exercise.

Here’s the deal:

When it comes to diet, in general, eating right and eating healthy is the only way you are going to lose weight. Like gasoline, where you put fuel in the car to make it go, you put fuel in the form of food in your body to make it go. And like an expensive car likes the good gasoline, so, too, does your body, in terms of quality and nutrient rich protein, fruits and vegetables, like the good stuff.

The expression, “you are what you eat” is very literal and accurate. Sometimes something as simple as keeping a food diary will help you to see patterns you might not be willing to recognize in your regular eating habits. Making true, permanent lifestyle food changes will go a very long way toward helping you realize your fitness goals. Eating healthy doesn’t mean denying yourself pleasure – food should be enjoyed – it’s about making the right choices.

When it comes to exercise, only exercise will help you to shape and tone the muscles of your body, giving you strength and shape where you want it. You don’t have to have an expensive gym membership to get fit – New York City can be your very own playground. It’s about finding a form or forms of exercise you enjoy and then sticking to them. Consult your primary care physician, but it is absolutely possible to begin an exercise program at any age. The trick is finding what you like and what will work for you. Exercise such as yoga, mat-based Pilates or high-intensity workouts can be done with very little equipment and using your own body.

It is the combination of both diet and exercise that will lead you to the body you want — you can’t ignore one over the other. If you’re interested in meeting with a personal trainer or inquiring after our yoga or mat-based Pilates programs, be sure to call DASHA® at 212-755-5500.
