Tips on Avoiding Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men worldwide, with one in six men affected.  This year, more than 233,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute.  This is more than brain, lung and colon cancers combined.  Nearly 30,000 will die.  When caught and treated early, many men are able to lead a disease-free life within five years.

Develop a Mediterranean philosophy.  Studies show the Mediterranean diet of one glass of red wine per day can be beneficial, but don’t go overboard.  Men who eat more than 10 grams of garlic or scallions per day also have a fifty percent lower risk of developing prostate cancer than those who eat less than two grams.

Choose foods high in isoflavones.  Isoflavones are found in kidney beans, tofu, chickpeas, lentils and peanuts.

Drink green tea.  Men who drink green tea or take green tea extract as a supplement have been found to have a reduced risk of prostate cancer.

Reduce the amount of dairy products you eat.  The risk is said to be small, but consuming dairy in moderation is a general good rule.

Eat fish.  Salmon, sardines, tuna and trout are examples of fatty fish with omega-3s that have been linked to the reduction of prostate cancer.

Consume more fat from plants than animals.  Cooking with olive oil instead of butter and sprinkling nuts or seeds on your salad rather than cheese are examples of ways to improve your diet.

Maintain a low-fat diet.  Meats, nuts, oils and dairy products contain fats.  To reduce the amount of fat you consume, choose leaner cuts or low-fat or reduced-fat dairy products.  This will also help your heart and control your weight.

Exercise.  Up to 30 minutes per day most days of the week keep the heart and body healthy.  There is no substitute for getting the body moving.

Maintain a healthy weight.  Keep your body mass index (BMI) below 30.

Make love.  Ejaculation helps you to clean your pipes.  Literally.  More than 12 ejaculations per month has been shown to be associated with a 15% decrease in prostate cancer risk.
