Studio Spotlight: Switch Playground
Workout Type:High Intensity Interval Training
Locations:East Village, SoHo
What to Expect: Switch Playground is the latest studio to pop up in the East Village area and attracts NYU students and fit professionals looking to change up their regular workout routines. The studio, which was founded in Cape Town, is described as a boot camp-meets-HIIT hybrid class with a nightclub vibe (think disco balls, strobe lights and a resident DJ spinning the latest EDM hits).
The class begins with a quick power yoga flow to help you refocus your mind and warm up your body. Then, you and a partner (bring a friend, or get ready to meet some hot singles) rotate around the room to complete 20 stations of unique cardio and strength circuits. Each station features a different machine or piece of equipment which you’ll use for one or two exercises.
Switch creator and founder Steve Uria sees the shared experience as the main component to the studio’s success. “It’s great for meeting people or bringing someone,” Uria says. “I’ve been approached by dating shows — and even know a couple who met on the playground!”
The 20-station set-up is very busy, but somehow it works. In addition to the lead instructor, there are trainers peppered around the room to help you every step of the way.
The killer workout is definitely an experience to remember.
