Making room for spontaneity in your busy life should be part of your wellness plan. Here, DASHA® co-founder Shannon Russo-Pollack tells us why.

DASHA®:  Do you consider yourself to be spontaneous?

SHANNON:  I think when I was younger and had less to worry about, it was a whole lot easier to be spontaneous.  There are definitely times I get this sudden inner impulse to do something radical or not part of the original plan. It’s like a tremendous burst of energy and I just go with it! I do love excitement, I’m a Gemini, after all!

How planned or unplanned is your daily life?

I tend to live a structured life Monday through Friday and then the cat comes out to play on the weekends!

What is the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done?

I called my mom and told her that I just jumped off a cliff in Switzerland. She was beside herself. I’m not sure what was more spontaneous, me shocking her or the jump!

What is the most spontaneous thing your spouse has ever done?

Oh, proposing to me on the loudspeaker midair over the Carolinas or putting down an offer on a house without ever consulting me. It could have been disastrous, but he went with his gut, and it turned out to be a great investment.

How do you make time for spontaneity in a busy life that is so scheduled with work and family commitments?

I love to play! I am an empty-nester for seven weeks during the summer when my two kids are at camp. The summer is my time to be playful, achieve personal goals and live with some spontaneity. It takes a tight schedule to get through my long to do list, but thanks to my assistant I am able to breathe a bit and focus on becoming a better ME.

What is your favorite thing to do with your family that can only be done in the summer?

Not fair! Both my kids are at sleepaway camp until mid-August. When they’re back, my favorite thing to do is play together in my backyard in the Hamptons!

Is spontaneity important for your wellness?

Yes, absolutely! Stepping out of your normal routine is a great way to rejuvenate! As we get older, wellness becomes the forefront.
