How Businesses Can Spread Goodwill through Charity Involvement

There’s a reason all those expressions and campaigns about “giving back” exist, and why many high schools mandate their students participate in their communities by volunteering their time to good causes.  Giving back is a win-win situation – it’s a good thing to do and you feel good doing it.  Our country was built on principles of helping those less fortunate or in need.

If you’re new to getting involved in charities, the great news is that there are so many ways you can go about it and get your feet wet, that you can custom-tailor your venture in a way that will make you feel most comfortable.  Do you want to just flat out donate financially to a not-for-profit, cause or organization in need of funds?  (That’s great and always appreciated.)  Do you want your whole team to participate in a fundraising event, such as walking a walk-a-thon, running a race, or volunteering services at an event?  (Always great for team building and morale boosting in the workplace.)  Or do you want to create an entire event from scratch to champion a cause near and dear to your heart?  (I confess, this is an ultimate goal of my own, and while I recognize it is a goal that will inevitably take more time, energy and money that I anticipate, again, the opportunity to give back, to get my team to get to know one another on a different level and devote time to emphasizing important fundamental principals of human nature all score high on the “great things to do, to help and be proud of” list.)

So, start small.   Maybe an employee of yours has a cause they’d love you to be a part of.  Maybe you heard of a big walk-a-thon this summer you’d love to form a team for.  Or maybe it’s time for that idea in the back of your head that’s been brewing to come to fruition, and you to call on your team members and partnerships and create that annual charity event or drive to raise money for that cause you truly believe in – maybe your golf buddy has a free banquet space to donate and the wine store you frequent in your neighborhood is happy to help sponsor that charity event in your head waiting to become a reality.

There are a few things we never regret in life, and spreading goodwill through charity involvement is one of them.  Start now.  It doesn’t matter how small or big you start, what’s important is that you’ve begun!  And you create a circle for good things to happen to other people, and to come back to you.
