The word “antioxidant” gets used very frequently when it comes to eating healthy and changing lifestyle habits. But what exactly is an antioxidant and how can we get them? DASHA is here to give you the ins and outs and everything you need to know.

What is it?: Antioxidants help prevent cell damage caused by “oxidants,” which are produced by the body to help fend off viruses. If the body has too many oxidants, they can cause damage to your health. The key is to have a balance of both antioxidants and oxidants.

Where to find them?: The most common place to find antioxidants are in fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins A, C and E. Some of the top foods with antioxidants are goji berries, wild blueberries, pecans, and dark chocolate. There are also supplements that are filled with antioxidants, but it is important to talk to your doctor or nutritionist before selecting a supplement to make sure it is right for your diet.

Key Benefits of Antioxidants:

  • Can help prevent heart disease
  • Help protect the nervous system
  • Aid in bolstering the immune system
  • Delays the aging process of skin
