7 Reasons to Practice Yoga

You’ve heard that yoga is good for you.  But why, and how?  It’s Week Three of the DASHA® Summer Wellness Challenge, and as we aim to help you Enhance your well-being® and you get in the fitness habit, consider all of the great health benefits of yoga:

It’s something you can do your whole life.  Like walking, tennis, golf, and swimming, yoga is something you can practice whether you’re in your 20s or your 80s.  You’re also using your own body weight to support you in many postures, which is proof that you don’t need a dumbbell to sculpt your muscles – you already have everything you need on you.

Yoga lowers your blood sugar and your bad cholesterol.  Lowering your blood sugar decreases your risk of diabetic complications like heart attack, kidney failure and blindness by lowering cortisol and adrenaline levels, which in turn encourage weight loss.

It’s good for your heart.  Yoga improves your cardiovascular conditioning by lowering your resting heart rate, increasing your endurance, and increasing your maximum uptake of oxygen during exercise.

It reduces insomnia.  Sleep efficiency and total sleep time improve, and the amount of time it takes to fall asleep and the number of times you wake can also decrease significantly.

It eases chronic aches and pains.  Yoga poses improve your posture and strengthen your back muscles, significantly lessening your pain.

It can make sex even more pleasurable.  Yoga reduces anxiety, increases your body awareness, and speeds up the release of hormones – the perfect trifecta for a boost in libido, lubrication and the ability to achieve orgasm.

Self-love.  Studies have shown that there is a correlation between practicing yoga and the level of satisfaction you have with your body.  There is also no such thing as a typical yogi body; yoga is an activity designed for all, and does not discriminate, no matter your shape or size.

Send us your photos of yourself practicing yoga via Facebook and Twitter, using #DASHAweek3, and be sure to stay tuned for our #DASHApopup location this week!
