WHAT IS THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME?

The space between your collarbone and first rib is called your thoracic outlet. When disorders occur in this space as the result of blood vessels or nerves being compressed, it is called thoracic outlet syndrome.

SYMPTOMS & DIAGNOSIS

Pregnancy, anatomical defects such as cervical rib, an extra rib that grows from the base of the neck just above the collarbone, trauma, and repetitive injuries can cause thoracic outlet syndrome. In general, lab tests and imaging such as X-rays or MRIs are required to diagnose properly. Symptoms may include pain in the shoulders and neck, headache, reduced sensation of touch, or swelling, as well as numbness, weakness and coldness in the fingers.

HOW DASHA® “INDEPENDENT CLIENT PROVIDERS” MAY HELP

Physical therapy is an excellent non-surgical way to provide relief from pain in thoracic outlet syndrome. Over time, stretching and strengthening the shoulder muscles will improve your posture and range of motion. Physical therapy will also alleviate pressure on blood vessels in the thoracic outlet area.
